A Stupid question or two

For the last two days I have been able to eat soft foods...i.e. mushies. Yesterday I ate a 1/2 cup of corn beef hash with a 1/4 cup of mash potatoes. I wondered if that was to much food and if I was in danger of stretching my pouch. The day before I had a 1/4 of refried beans topped with ff-cheddar cheese and egg beaters (eq. of 2 eggs) soft scrambled with ff-cheddar. I felt stuffed after the dinner, but I wondered if I am eating to much. Any suggestions, comments or advice??

Next stupid question is. Will water just slide down in the lower stomach from the stoma(pouch)? I ask because I was reading another blog where the bander slimmed or PB off of water. Now the problem might have been for her that she was to tight, but I guess I'm asking because I don't want to drink to much at one time and have my pouch to full only to slim or PB it.

Any suggestions, comments or advice is greatly welcomed to this newbie in the game.

Thanks.

Definitely not stupid questions. And it's strange stuff to get used to, but it's always a personal answer, too.

I can answer the questions as they were for me...

Right after surgery, when hunger finally returned, in the mushy stage, 1/2 a cup of food was reasonable. If you feel stuffed, then you maybe eating too much. It's that feeling you have to listen to. Immediately following surgery, as I was easing back onto food, mushy and otherwise, I'd take a bite and wait a minute or so to see how it felt. And in seeing how it felt, I'd also gauge fullness. So the only thing I'd recommend, if you're not already doing it, is really take it slow. let the band give you the feedback and see how it feels. Taking it slow now will help later when you get to real restriction.

Band_Groupie had a thing with her band as she was learning it that I also took for myself. The trick is not to figure out how much you CAN eat, the trick is to figure out how little will sustain you until your next desired meal. So play around with HOW LITTLE you can eat. You might find, that's actually not enough for getting in protein and whatnot, but I think it's a good starting point to see how the band works with you, too.

As for water...never ever guzzle it. Yes, you can PB on water. I have before, on purpose, testing restriction. About half my gulp came up and I was able to swallow it back down. I'd just left a fill appt and I was testing things. Water will go down relatively quickly but it doesn't go down like it used to, either. I almost always burp after taking a normal swallow of water. You probably won't run into sliming with water unless something else is stuck in the stoma, would be my guess. If something else is in there and you take a sip of water to try to get it to move through, that can actually just make it worse.

Hope this helps. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions you are hesitant to ask.

I have no idea why you got three comments...deleting two, they are all the same...but you'll probably still see three emails. I only clicked once, I promise! :)

So not stupid questions.

You shouldn't slime from water, she is likely too tight. You may not be able to guzzle it down anymore, but drinking normally should just slide right down.

If I overeat I start to feel pain in my back and shoulder area. Then I know I went too far.

I just ate until I was full, but mushies probably will not stretch your pouch. Some is slowly moving into the lower stomach.

As to PBing on water. That has only happened to me after I have eaten solid food and try to drink water immediately after. The solid food is blocking the water from going through the band. I usually wait at least 30 minutes after I eat before I drink anything. I can't always guzzle water but if I take a few mouthfulls it goes right through the band. As long as I don't have any solid food in my pouch.

And no stupid questions. If you don't ask we wouldn't be able to give you all these answers.

Thank you ladies for the great answers. I needed to make sure I wasn't eating to much.

LD, no problem on the deleted comments. I do it all the time. The computer has a mind of its own. Just like now, I could have sworn I already posted this comment to you....go figure!!

Thanks for the positive words you left on my blog, Pamela. Much appreciated!

I'm like Sandy, I've pb'd on water; back when I had the band slip and then also when I have forgotten and taken a drink AFTER eating. That gets me every time.

Hope you are having a super week!

Not stupid questions at all. that's what we're here for!! I've pb'ed on water, but it was after I drank too quickly after eating and was too full. Just take it easy and i'll say this, almost 6 months out, it is still hard for me to remember to eat not until I feel I am full, but until I truly feel like I don't need more. It's hard to get over the habit of just WANTING to keep eating, especially if it's something we really like. When you are on solids and have restriction, you will have those tiems when you really overdo it and you learn from those mistakes.

Oh and sista' girl, you can just call me by my other name "White She Devil". :) ~hugs~

I think everyone else has answered pretty well, but I'll answer too just for the fun. I usually eat until I feel really full. I don't measure my servings anymore, but I know my small plate holds about a cup of food. I also sometimes get the shoulder/neck pain when I'm really full. Not as much now, six months out, but I often did at the start. I don't worry about stretching my stoma or overeating. I probably should, but I don't.

As far as PB-ing water, I have also done it. It usually happens when I drink about 30 minutes after eating. I always wait at least that long, but sometimes I will feel nausea or "stuck" on the water. And I've PB'd it. But I still drink fast. I'm a horrible bandster. Don't listen to me!

Hi Pamela! I just found your blog. In the beginning its really about listening to your body and taking it very slow. It's so bizarre that we only eat so little, or so little can satisfy us! Even a small skinny latte satisfied me. The band will let you know if you are getting to full!

Glad you asked your questions because I got a lot out of the answers. Just got my first fill and am having a hard time determining if I have restriction or not - talk about stupid!

Thank you ladies again. Bonnie I guess we both have questions, but I have found that the old say is true....the only stupid question is the one not asked.

Your questions helped me also. I am only 6 days post of and still have so many questions. Thank you!
